Meet Emily

CC: Hi! I’m Emily. Welcome to Chroma Counseling. My theory on mental health is that each of us experiences trauma to some degree, whether that’s on an individual level or as part of a community that we’re in, that creates narratives about ourselves, other people, and the world around us. A lot of times these narratives get in our way— they teach us shame and they keep us from achieving what we could if it weren’t for these narratives. So my job is to help you unlearn these narratives, to figure out how to let go of them using a variety of tools, so that you can move toward being your best self. If this sounds like something that appeals to you, get in touch! I’m excited to help you move forward into becoming the best version of you that you can be.

(she/her)

Emily Wilson is a Supervising Licensed Independent Social Worker through the State of Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. A native of the Columbus area, she developed an early passion for mental health and social justice work. Emily received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the College of Wooster. After graduating with her B.A., Emily spent a year doing volunteer work in Belfast, Northern Ireland that was focused on peace-building and reconciliation with youth in highly segregated areas. For Emily, this work reinforced just how important safe spaces and supportive adults are for young people living in actively traumatizing situations. The experience also allowed her to realize her love for the United Kingdom and so she later returned to get her Master of Research from the University of York followed by a Master of Social Work from The Ohio State University. In addition to the above collegial accomplishments, she is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy.

Emily is passionate about using trauma-informed, strengths-based practices with a significant emphasis on self-determination and autonomy in her work with her clients. She fully believes that building a trusting, non-judgmental, validating relationship with her clients is vital to the therapeutic process in addition to using research-based methods to address each individual’s needs and wants. Her ideal client is self-led and willing to do the work outside of session time; if you’re seeking a therapist who lets you take the lead, you’ve come to the right place!

Emily’s social work background serves to highlight her firm belief in the value of intersectionality in her therapeutic work. She is particularly interested in her work with clients in the LGBTQIA+ community and helping her clients of color navigate their generational trauma related to living in a white supremacist culture. She enjoys helping her clients challenge traditional norms and uplift their stories and lived experiences and, as a result, is kink positive, polyamory affirming, and sex work friendly. Emily’s background in the disability rights field has led her to subscribe to the Social Model of disability, as well, identifying societal barriers as the problem, not the person. Tangentially, Emily believes in the health at every size (HAES) approach (while also acknowledging that a person’s worth is not based on their health). Above all, Emily sees the impact that being part of a marginalized culture can have on a person’s functioning within the world, and she seeks to help her clients unlearn the societal shame narratives connected to these identities that they have been taught to internalize.

Emily is a fat queer gender expansive woman and relationship anarchist. In her free time, she loves to lift weights, play D&D, and reread the Wikipedia page about octopuses.
