I’ve never been to therapy before. What do I need to know?
Therapy works best with…
Trust
Therapy doesn’t work well if you can’t trust your therapist; it works a whole lot better if you and your therapist can be honest with each other. Building trust is hard work with a complete stranger and your therapist knows that. It’s our job to make sure you feel at ease to speak your truth when you’re ready. Let your therapist know what you need to make the relationship work!
Self-awareness
So you’ve shown up, built trust, and started being vulnerable. Great work! One of the best but hardest parts of this whole process comes from you letting your therapist know what you want to work on. Contrary to popular belief, you’re in charge in the therapist’s office—you’re the expert on yourself and we’re here to help guide your process.
Vulnerability
Man, this part is hard. We get it. But once you’ve built that relationship with your therapist, it’s up to you to start being open and honest about what’s going on in your world. Sometimes that means admitting to things you aren’t proud of, but remember that your therapist is not here to judge you or think less of you.
Doing the work
Once you’ve identified what works for you in session, it’s up to you to practice those things outside your therapy sessions. Most folks only see their therapist for an hour every 1-2 weeks— that’s not a lot of time to practice your newfound skills! Your therapist can help you find ways to remember to use those skills (and figure out what barriers might be getting in your way).
